This is me – the party picture

Each week we’re asking psychologist Jane McCartney to analyse a different type of profile pic and tell us what it really means…

Week one – the party picture

Psychologists have found that time and time again it’s true what the old saying states: first impressions count. They also impact what the viewer thinks and perceives about the people they are looking at in images and pictures.  This Facebook picture is a great example of getting that first fleeting impression right.  Here you see three friends having a fun night out.  It’s not only instantly  eye-catching, bright colours, friendly atmosphere, nice smiles, but there’s  also an added hint of mystery about it too, why the glasses, and with one of  the main subjects, a slight look away from the camera to maybe  something…..or someone, more interesting, just beyond the camera angle.  It’s certainly interesting enough for the viewer to want to find out more.

Research has found that the more instantly engaging a Facebook image is the more likely people are either to like it, comment on it or share it. A short and entertaining explanation of the picture piques people’s interest and gets them talking about where and why and how. You never know, we may yet get to see what, or who, the yellow lady finds so interesting…
