We, The Funky Mamas – a retrospective of two women

A little journey through our lives, and a few thoughts on our dreams and projects – because “Funky is a State of Doing”

People often ask us why we decided to call ourselves “The Funky Mamas”, and we’ve tried to find a reasonable enough explanation. Sometimes it seems like we’ve found one that makes sense, but the problem is there is no single answer that explains it all. Funky is an almost permanent state of being for us, in things both great and small: let’s just say that it really is very simple for us to face life with this kind of vibe. We’re more or less like Sly & the Family Stone : we like talking about life, the questions it poses, facing problems with a smile, and with a vibe that makes you move your body, that hits you on two different levels: the emotional and the rational.

This is Funk: fast and playful, but at the same time packed with content, technique, knowledge, and with profound links to jazz and blues it results in something that’s freer, more colourful, and maybe less serious – if only superficially. We’re Chiara and Justine, and we’ve decided to be The Funky Mamas because that’s exactly what we are. We’re funky and we know that more funk around us is exactly what we need. But more than anything, we know that there are hordes of funky women (and men) out there – even if they’re not aware of it yet! We don’t want to change the world on our own, but with the help of our readers and followers we do: it’s a tacit agreement and a permanent form of mutual respect. Our future will be funkier than ever and we want to embrace a universe of ideas and battles related to girl power, culture, education, our children, and to men’s rights too. Our revolution starts from the bottom, from the small things, from your next door neighbour.

We are a ‘slow’ movement.
