Connected and Inspired

2012, CHRIS BURKARD PHOTOGRAPHY, GLOBE, ICELAND,

To me Instagram is a way for me to break down the barriers between viewers and photographers.  It is personal, mobile, and a source of inspiration for myself and my followers.

When I’m choosing what to post it’s usually based around the subject of nature and everything that encompasses the beauty of the outdoors.  I aim to make nature the hero in my images and show the relation of humans to our environment.   The actual subjects in my photos are friends or colleagues on my travels. My photos are a combination of current travels and past trips.

The desire to inspire others and explore new horizons and places is what’s always driven me to go to all these new places.  The biggest part of going to any of these locations is that I want to discover and invite people along my journeys whether figuratively or in reality.  It’s rewarding for me to be able to share in real time from my travels.  I can take a photo and seconds later post it on Instagram for my friends and followers to see.

I find that my photos with the most likes come from really queuing into who’s following you and understanding your demographic.  Lots of people might not have that understanding or connection with their fan base.  I listen to my fans and aim to post photos that I think my fans can imagine themselves visiting and enjoying.

TIPS: What I recommend to people is to post pictures that are relatable.  I like photos taken with a unique perspective and in beautiful light.  Photos that tell a story and represent a moment.  I suggest photos that are easily digestible.  There shouldn’t be too many elements and you should know exactly what you’re looking at.  You should also be able to tell what the image is even when you squint your eyes or view it small in your profile.

APPS: I use VSCO Cam and Afterlight to edit my photos as well as Squaready to make them widescreen.  Most of the times I’m transferring photos from my camera to my phone and then just editing them within my phone with pretty basic color correction.

WHO TO FOLLOW: Current Instagrammers that inspire me are @forestwoodward, @myspacetom, @ladzinski, and @markclinton. It’s great to have a community platform like Instagram to connect with tons of like minded individuals.
